A Guide to Helping Your Child with Reading
This guide was published by Lancashire County Council to help families of children who are in the Foundation Stage to start reading at home together. It is full of handy hints of how you can encourage your children to continue reading at home.
The Accessibility Wizard Would you like to make your computer more child friendly? Everyone who has Windows has a program to help them do this called the Accessibility Wizard. Find it under 'All Programs', then 'Accessories' and 'Accessibility'. The wizard will then guide you through how to make the pointer, cursor, icons and on-screen font larger as your child develops their competence in using them. It can also help with accessibility for specific difficulties, for example a tremor.
Home Access
Home Access is a new government-run programme for parents of children in Years 3-9 who do not have a computer at home. It aims to provide 270,000 families with technology at home to support their learning. If your family does not have a home computer, you may be eligible for a Home Access Grant. These grants can be used to purchase an internet ready computer which has parental control and anti-virus software already installed on it. You will also receive support from an approved supplier to help you get going with it all. For more information, ask in school or go to
This is a website designed for families and adults. Whether
you're a parent encouraging your children, a family wanting to read
together or an adult wanting to improve your skills, Reading for Life is designed to help.
Take a look at the 'Reading Ideas' page for fun ways to get into reading as a family. For loads of resources to explore and freebies to download, the page 'Stuff To Do' may be a good first port of call.
Meeting The Needs of the Individual Pupil Sometimes
some extra help is needed to make sure that a child reaches their full
potential. Schools and parents can access the special educational needs
service. Follow this link to the Cumbri County Council Information page for parents and carers on this subject.
Local government services for parents all in one place. This website has a whole information section for families on school, learning and development, including pre-schools. It also has information on Special Educational Needs.

Please
let
us know if any of these links are not working. Also a note of
caution for parents- all these websites have been checked rigorously by
staff. At school the school internet filters should not allow your
children
to access inappropriate content and as an additional safety measure the
children are only allowed to use the Yahoo Kids! search engine. Home
computers are more difficult to
filter and the internet is continually changing. Please supervise your
children's use of the internet even when using it for school work.
